Corporal Alfred William MARKS, L/7234, 1st  Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  died of wounds, Flanders France, 17th May 1915, age 29.

Born Wimbledon , Surrey, son of Alfred and Emma Marks, of 4, Haymarket Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.


1911 Census - 4, Haymarket Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire - Alfred Marks, head, age 53, married, college waiter, born Wimbledon, Surrey; Emma Marks, wife, age 57, married 27 years, 5 children, 4 still alive, born Woolwich, Kent; Alfred William Marks, son, age 25, single, Army Reserve, born Wimbledon, Surrey; Arthur Sydney Marks, son, age 23, single, miller, flour mills, born Wimbledon, Surrey; Amy Elizabeth Marks, daughter, age 21, single, dressmaker, born Wimbledon, Surrey; Frederick Marks, son, age 19, single, tailors assistant, born Wimbledon, Surrey.


Worked as a porter at the Cambridge union society and being a reservist, rejoined his old company The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), at the outbreak of war.

Enlisted Maidstone, Kent.  Resided Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.

23rd August 1914, posted BEF.

In August 1914 he was wounded at Mons and consequently sent back to England for recovery before returning to France in April of 1915. A month later, during an attack on Hill 69, he suffered gas poisoning and shrapnel wounds and was transferred to Boulogne hospital where he later died of his injuries at the age of 29.

Buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, VIII. D. 18., France.
