6th February 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 21st March 1914, awarded 3rd Class Certificate of Education; 13th May 1914, awarded 2nd Class Certificate of Education; 10th June 1914, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 26th September 1914, posted 3rd Battalion, & appointed paid Lance Corporal;  30th September 1914 to 5th October 1914, Fort Pitt Hospital, Chatham, Kent, tonsillitis; 30th November 1914. deprived of stripe; 17th December 1914, Keynock? Town, not having his arms & equipment in his possession whilst on picquet, 14 days Field Punishment No.2.; 10th January 1915, Fort Darland, absent from 9.00am until 11.00pm 11th January, when warned for Draft, 7 days  Field Punishment No.2. forfeits 2 days pay; 13th January 1915, posted BEF & 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 24th March 1915, wounded,  gun shot wounds, knees, hands & thighs.
