Lance Corporal Henry SOUTH, G/11175, 10th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, Flanders France, 21st September 1917, age 23.

Born Elmley, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, son of Thomas William and Mary Ann South,  21, Grove Road, Shoeburyness, Essex.


1911 Census - 23, Grove Road, Shoeburyness, Essex - Thomas W South, head, age 45, married, timberman, contractor, worker, born Lower Halstow, Kent; Mary Ann South, wife, age 45, married 24 years, 5 children, 4 still alive, born Newington, Kent; Henry South, son, age 17, single, grocers assistant, born Elmley, Isle of Sheppey, Kent; Lily  South, daughter, age 7, born Rainham, Kent.


His brother William South also fell.

Enlisted Chatham, Kent.  Resided Strood, Kent.

Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 106 to 108., Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

"Casualty of the Great War, William was an Air Mechanic 1st Class, Royal Air Force,(Aeroplane Repair Park) Service no.73483. He was born in Lower Halstow, Kent in 1887, and emigrated to the United States in 1908, giving his address as Clark County, South Dakota. He attended, on a part-time basis, Yankton College. He enlisted in New York. The American Legion in Yankton place a WFA (Western Front Association) wreath and the flags of the United Kingdom and United States on his grave every Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. The inscription on the private memorial is incorrect as far as year of birth and middle initial are concerned. He died of influenza. His brother,Lance Corporal Henry South, Service Number G/11175 of the 10th Bn.,The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)fell on 21st September 1917 aged 23 and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 106 to 108.He and his brother, Henry are commemorated on the War Memorial at Shoeburyness. They were sons of Thomas William South and Mary Ann South of 21 Grove Road, Shoeburyness, Essex, England."
