Lance Corporal Joseph Arthur BROWN, G/4173, Depot, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died at home 29th January 1917, age 38.

Born  Bromley, Kent, son of Joseph and Eliza Brown, of Bromley, Kent.

Husband of Edwina Jessie L. Brown, of 1, Henry St., Bromley, Kent.

Children - Edwina, born 6th December 1902, Bromley, Kent; Elsie Brown  born 13th July 1909. Bromley, Kent.

Enlisted  Bromley, Kent, age 35, height 5ft 6½ inches, weight 179lbs. Formerly painter.

24th October 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 30th October 1914, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 14th January 1915, transferred to Cyclist Company, 2185 & posted 12th Div Company; 2nd June 1915, posted T.C.; 14th July 1915, transferred to Royal West Kent Regiment; 17th July 1915, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 27th November 1915, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 11th December 1915, appointed paid Lance Corporal  & employed at H M Factory, West Gorton Chemical Works, Openshaw, Manchester under the authority of The Minister for Munitions; 10th March 1916, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment.

Died 29th January 1917, in Ancoats Hospital Manchester as a result of severe acid burns.

Report from West Gorton Chemical Works - The man died from severe acid burns on 27th January last. The inquest was held on the 29th of that month, when a verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned. The man was a fitter and whilst repairing the gland of an acid cock a head of acid was in the pipe, the plug blew out discharging on the unfortunate man which caused the burns from which he died.

Buried at Bromley (London Road or  Old) Cemetery, grave reference,  O. H. 11. "C.". Commemorated on Bromley War Memorial.
