Lance Corporal Norman Walter BOAKES,  G/16965, 6th   Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, Flanders, France,  12th May 1917, age 22.

Born Sevenoaks, Kent, son of Sidney and Mary Ellen Boakes, of Clenches Cottage, Kippington, Sevenoaks, Kent.


1911 Census - Hurst Farm, The Weald, Sevenoaks, Kent - Sidney Boakes, head, age 49, married, gardener, born Chevening, Kent; Mary Ellen Boakes, wife, age 46, married 18 years, 1 child, still alive, born Sevenoaks, Kent; Norman Walter Boakes, son, age 15, single, carrier, own account, born Weald, Kent.


21st July 1916, Sevenoaks, Kent married Florence Smith, of Hurst Farm, Sevenoaks Weald, Kent.

Called up for Service, joined Maidstone, Kent, age 21, height 5ft 10 inches, weight 147lbs.  Resided Hurst Farm, Sevenoaks Weald, Sevenoaks, Kent. Formerly farmer.

27th July 1916, Called up for Service; 29th July 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 17th January 1917, appointed paid Lance Corporal; 21st March 1917, embarked / disembarked, posted 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 18th April 1917, joined Battalion, "C" Company.

8th July 1917, date to which Separation Allowance of  9/- a week and allotment of pay of 3/6 a week will be paid.

3rd December 1917, pension awarded  to widow of 13/9 a week.

25th May 1920, Statement of Relatives -  Widow, Florence Boakes, Hurst Farm, The Weald, Sevenoaks; Father, Sidney Boakes, Hurst Farm, The Weald, Sevenoaks; Mother, Mary Boakes, Hurst Farm, The Weald, Sevenoaks.

Commemorated at  Arras Memorial, Bay 7, Pas de Calais, France.
