1911 Census - Harbourland, Boxley - John Springhall, head, age 59, married, stockman on farm, born Boxley, Kent; Mary Ann Springhall, wife, age 60, married 28 years, no children; Albert Bailie, boarder, age 25, single, cowman, born Maidstone, Kent.
17th February 1912, Boxley, Kent, married Rachel Springhall, daughter of John Springhall.
Child - Clara Bailey, born 5th July 1914, Maidstone, Kent.
Enlisted Maidstone, Kent, age 29, height 5ft 2 inches, weight 132lbs. Formerly cowman. Resided Rose Cottage, Sandling Lane, Maidstone, Kent
10th December 1915, enlisted; 19th October 1916, embarked for France; 5th November 1916, joined battalion.
His Commanding Office wrote: "It is with great regret I have to inform you of the death of your husband. He was killed in action on the morning of 4th. I have known him quite a long time and had a great respect for him and feel his loss greatly, as does the whole platoon, foe he was a splendid soldier. In your sad loss I hope you will find consolation in the fact that he died a true soldier's death in the front and the thick of a terrific battle."
29th April 1918, pension of 18/9 a week for widow and one child.

Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 106 to 108, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium and at War Memorial near to St. Mary and All Saints Church, Boxley Kent.
