Born Yokell, Hertfordshire, son of William John & Mary Hemsley, Church Farm, Cooling near Sittingbourne, Kent / Felling Pitts, Beltring, Paddock Wood, Kent.


1911 Census - Felling Pitts, Beltring, Paddock Wood, Kent - William John Hemsley, head, age 48, married, farm labourer, born Speldhurst, Kent; Mary Hemsley, wife, age 46, married, 19 years, 8 children, 3 still alive, born Pembrook, Wales; Albert Hemsley, son, age 18, single, farm labourer, born New Town, Hertfordshire; Amos Hemsley, son, age 9, born Sandwich, Kent.


Enlisted  Maidstone,  Kent, age 22 years & 300 days, height 5ft 9 inches, weight 144lbs.  Resided 2 Orchard Cottage, Beltring, Paddock Wood, Kent.  Formerly labourer.

20th April 1915, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 30th April 1915, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 29th September 1915, posted Indian Expeditionary Force,  & 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 30th September 1915, embarked; 15th October 1915, Salonika, attached 7th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, (No. 7/28486, Civil Occupation Group; 15th December 1915, to Hospital, Balkans, septic toe & heel, frostbite feet; 31st March 1916, rejoined Battalion; 23rd September 1916, wounded & missing;  3rd November 1916, transfer to Royal Dublin Fusiliers proposed; 12th April 1917 now believed killed;  24th August 1917, death accepted as having occurred on 23rd September 1916.

Sole Legatee (friend) - Mrs Lily Watts (formerly Miss Lily Startup), Silver Birch Cottage, Bishopsdale, Biddenden, Kent.

Commemorated at Doiran Memorial, Greece.
