Private Charley COOK, G/11749, "C" Company, 9th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died at VAD Hospital, Quarry Hill, Tonbridge, Kent, 4.00am, 25th March 1916, age 20. Died from internal injuries accidentally received in getting out of a train whilst in motion. Coroners Verdict, Death by misadventure.

1911 Census - Laddinford, Yalding, Kent - James Thomas Cook, head, age 45, married, rough carpenter on farm, born Sussex; Ellen Elizer Cook, wife, age 43, married 22 years, 5 children, all still alive, born Sussex; Charley Cook, son, age 15, single, labourer on farm , born Penshurst, Kent; Alfred George Cook, son, age 9, born Tunbridge Wells, Kent; Thomas Simmons, nephew, age 20, single, labourer on farm, born Yalding, Kent.
Enlisted Maidstone, Kent, age 20 years & 210 days, height 5ft 6½ inches, weight 123lbs, slight hernia, wears truss. Resided Belgrave Terrace, Laddinford, Yalding, Kent. Formerly farm labourer.
Home 12th December 1915 to 25th March 1916.
12th December 1915, enlisted; 12th December 1915, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 12th December 1915, to Army Reserve; 21st January 1916, mobilized & posted 9th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment;
17th March 1916 to 25th March 1916, VAD Hospital, Tonbridge, Kent, internal injuries due to accident - admitted as a result of accident on Railway Train. Fractured ribs, crushed left kidney, spleen torn from its attachment and found attached to left side of the ?????. Fractured right forearm in two places. Lived for 8 days with some slight amount of albumen daily - only passed 3 oz of urine at a time. Inquest held 27th March 1916. Post Mortem allowed by Coroner.

Buried at Yalding (St Peter & St Paul), New Graveyard, North-East corner, Row F9, Grave No.79, Yalding, Kent. Commemorated on Yalding War Memorial
NOTE: Soldiers Died in the Great War show first name as Charley; CWGC website shows it as Charlie.
