3rd July 1917, War Office to Infantry Records - "A postcard dated 10.5.1917 addressed to Mrs M Pelling, 5 Compton Avenue, Brighton, has been received from a French Prisoner of War at Soltau, notifying the death of her husband E J Pelling in that Camp, on 9.5.17. This report, which is taken as referring to No.18615. Pte E J Pelling, 7th  Royal West Kent Regiment, may be accepted for official purposes, the usual non-effective documents prepared and the next of kin notified."

Certificate of Death B.No.3496 - Translation - It is hereby notified that Edwin John Pelling, Private 7th Royal West Kents, 7th Battalion, 15th Company, Tradesman, age 42 years, 10 months, Protestant Religion, Resident at Brighton England, born at Brighton England, Christian and maiden name of wife: Maud Saxpey, Parents' names and place of residence: William Pelling, (dead) - Anne Pelling nee Lloyd, Brighton; Died at Munster Camp in the Reserve Hospital, of Pleuritis, on the 9th May 1917, at 9.10pm. - Munster Camp, 10th May 1917, Reserve Hospital - Chief Medical Officer, O.Buntz, Reserve Staff Surgeon.

15th July 1917, date to which allowances will be paid to Pelling E M, wife,  5 Compton Avenue, Brighton. Separation Allowance 21/- a week & Allotment of Pay of 3/6 a week.

14th January 1918, pension of 18/9 a week awarded to widow & one child.

12th November 1921, report from Police Station, Town Hall, Brighton - With reference to the attached - I beg to report having made enquiries nad ascertained that Mrs Maud Pelling, the woman in question, removed from 19 Gloucester Street in this Borough, about 18 months ago, when she stated she was going into service, at Burgess Hill, but nothing has been seen or heard of her since, and I am unable to obtain her precise address. I respectfully beg to suggest that The Officer in Charge, Infantry Record Office, Hounslow, be informed as in report.

Buried at Ohlsdorfer Friedhof, Ohlsdorf, Hamburg-Nord, Hamburg Cemetery, IV. G. 15., Germany.
