Private Herbert SHIELDS, G/38650, 7th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, (formerly M2/178000, RASC, MT), died of wounds, Whiteness Auxiliary Hospital, Warrington, 1st November 1918, age 32.

Born Dringhouses, Yorkshire, son of John & Harriet Shields.

1885, St Edward's, Dringhouses, York, baptism of Hermit Shields, son of John & Harriet Shields.


1911 Census - 20 Brownlow Street, Groves, York - John Shields, head, age 52, married, gardener domestic, worker, born, Skewsby, Yorkshire; Harriet Shields, wife, age 52, married 30 years, 4 children, 2 still alive, born Wenby, Yorkshire; Hermit Shields, son, age 26, single, cab driver, worker, born Dringhouses, Yorkshire; Dora Annie Shields, daughter, age 22, born Dringhouses, Yorkshire.


1912 June York Registration District, Hermit Shields, married Edith M Haywood, (born 18th March 1892),  21, Gilkes Street, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. 

Children - Jack Shields, born 2nd December 1912; Eric Shields, born 7th July 1914; Harold Shields, born 10th October 1915; Irene Shields, born 1st October 1918.

Enlisted York, Yorkshire.

1921 December Middlesbrough Registration District, Edith Margaret Shields married Thomas E Meynell.

Buried at York Cemetery, Sec. A. Grave 9. 2609., Yorkshire.
