28th April 1917,  Letter from Captain A Gillies-Wicken, British Chaplain, with Canadian Force, Prisoner of War, Minden, Germany - "I regret to have to report the death in hospital here on April 19th 1917 from Cerebro Spinal Meningitus of No.12257 Private J W Emery 12th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment. This man was taken prisoner on or about March 20th 1917. I have already communicated with his relatives."

Death Certificate (translated), received from Kommandantur des Gefangenenlager, Minden - Christian name and surname -  Emery Jess (British); Regiment and No - 7th Roy West Kents; Date of Birth and Place - 18.6.1892 at Otford, Kent, England; Address of Relatives - sister Miss Emery, 5 Willow Terrace, Otford, Sevenoaks; Date of Capture - unknown; Date of Death - 19.4.1917  at 3.45pm in the Prisoners of War Hospital, Minden; Cause of death - Tuberculosis Meningitus; Place of Burial - French Cemetery, Minderheide, Grave No.212; Has the grave a distinctive sign and could it be visited later by the family - Yes, it bears a wooden Cross with the name, and it can be visited later on; Of what consists the effects - No effects; If the relatives have not yet been advised of the decease of the soldier, could a Priest, a Doctor or a Nurse who was with him, or attending him during his illness supply us with particulars as to his last moments and Burial - He was attended by a Minister of Religion. There are no special details to record.
