Private (Rifleman) Richard James HARVEY, G/20822, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, (20th Battalion, London Regiment), died of wounds, 2nd June 1918, 4 Field Ambulance, Flanders France, age 19.

Born Lambeth, Surrey, son of Richard and Miriam Harvey, of 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London.


1911 Census - 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London - Richard Harvey, head, age 39, married, carman, contractor for cartage, born Durham, Lanvhester; Miriam Harvey, wife, age 35, married 14 years, 6 children, 5 still alive, born Addlestone, Surrey.

NOTE - cannot find other members of the family.


Enlisted Camberwell, SE, age 18 years & 1 month, height 5ft 2½ inches.  Resided West Norwood, SE. Formerly carman.

18th July 1917,Called up for Service & posted 23rd Training Reserve Battalion, Service No.TR/10/108397; 19th July 1917, Aldershot, 97th Training Reserve Battalion; 13th October 1917, Aldershot, refusing lunch room fatigues, 4 days confined to Barracks; 7th December 1917, posted 53rd YS Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment; 6th January 198, Worlingham?, absent without leave from 9.45pm 6th January 1918 to 11.00 am 7th January 1918, absent from Parade when warned for guard duty, 14 days confined to Barracks, forfeits 8 days pay, forfeits 2 days pay; 23rd March 1918, Tunbridge Wells, absent from 11.00 pm until 7.55pm 25th March 1918, not complying with Garrison Order No.2., of 1st March 1918, travelling by rail without a pass, 7 days confined to Barracks, forfeits 3 days pay, forfeits 3 days pay; 31st March 1918, posted BEF & embarked; 1st April 1918, posted 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, Service No.G/25062; 3rd April 1918, "J" depot, transferred to  20th Battalion, London Regiment; 2nd June 1918, wounded in action.

10th October 1919, Statement of Relatives, completed by mother - Father, Richard Harvey, no communications with him; Mother, Miriam Jane Harvey, 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London; Brothers - William John Harvey, age 21, 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London; Sidney A Harvey, age 18, 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London; Sisters - Edith Harvey, age 17, 5, Beadman Street, West Norwood, London.

Buried at  Montigny Communal Cemetery, A. 23., Somme, France.
