Born Northfleet, Kent.

17th March 1903, Gravesend, Kent, married Eliza Coshall, spinster, of 60, The Lawn, Northfleet, Gravesend.

Children: Thomas Henry, born 17th May 1903, Gravesend, Kent; Nellie Eliza, born 28th September 1908, Northfleet; Annie Elizabeth, born 12th September 1910, Northfleet; George, born 9th January 1915, Northfleet, died 31st March 1916; Irene May, born 3rd May 1917, Northfleet.

Previously served in Royal Engineers Submarine Marines, Thames Division, Service No.920,  for a term of engagement of 6 years, discharged 1st February 1907.

Enlisted Gravesend, Kent, age 33 years & 62 days, height 5ft 5 inches, weight 143lbs.  Resided 60 Lawn Road,  Northfleet, Kent. Formerly boatman.

16th November 1915, enlisted & posted Depot Royal West Kent Regiment; 16th November 1915, posted 10th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 20th February 1916, Aldershot, overstaying his leave from midnight 20th February until 11.00pm 21st February, 23 hours, admonished, forfeits one days pay; 3rd May 1916, embarked Southampton; 4th May 1916, disembarked Havre; 8th June 1916, 41 DRS admitted, tonsillitis; 16th June 1916, to Duty; 4th July 1916, transferred to England, ex 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, per Hospital Ship, gassed; 5th July 1916, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 5th July 1916 to 11th August 1916, 5th General Hospital, Portsmouth, gas poisoning, discharged on 10 day furlough; 22nd August 1916, posted 12th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st September 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 21st September 1916, absent from Tattoo until 6.30am 27th September, deprived of 14 days pay, forfeits 7 days pay; 3rd October 1916, embarked; 19th October 1916, posted 7th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 18th November 1916, posted missing.

16th July 1917, pension of 26/3 a week awarded to Widow, Eliza Barnes (formerly Broad, nee Coshall) & three children.

17th July 1917, date to which Separation Allowance of 19/6 a week & Allotment of Pay of 3/6 a week, will be paid.

18th November 1919, Statement of Relatives - Widow, Eliza Broad, now Barnes, 60, Lawn Road, Northfleet, Kent; Children - Thomas Henry, born 17th May 1903, 60, Lawn Road, Northfleet, Kent; Nellie Eliza, born 28th September 1908, 60, Lawn Road, Northfleet, Kent; Annie Elizabeth, 12th September 1910, 60, Lawn Road, Northfleet, Kent; Queenie May, 3rd May 1917, 60, Lawn Road, Northfleet, Kent; Brother - James Broad, age 45, 3 Taunton Road, Galley Road, Swanscombe; Sisters - Nellie Broad, Rose Broad, age not known, address not known. 

Buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, IX.G.21., Grandcourt, Somme, France.


26th September 1992 - letter from Irene May Maceale?, daughter of the deceased serviceman, of 1 Central Avenue, Tilbury, Essex, RM18 7RX - "To whom it may concern. I give full authority to Mrs Maureen Margaret Tomlinson to receive any information relating to my late father Thomas H Broad" Request for Service Details completed by Maureen Margaret Tomlinson, 1 Baxby Terrace, Hurworth Place, Durham, DL2 2DN.

It is stated in the documents that he had previous service in the Royal Engineers. Unfortunately no other information concerning this is recorded.

The actual place of his death is also not recorded.
