Private Wallace SARGENT, G/23129, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, 22nd February 1917, age 38.

Born Lindfield, Sussex.

20th February 1915, Poole, Dorset, married Clara Manning, 28, Chapel Street, Hazelslade, near Hednesford, Stafford.

Children - Edith Mary Sargent, born 22nd July 1916, Lichfield; Wallace John Sargent, born 2nd July 1917, Hednesford.

Enlisted Kingston-on-Thames, age 36 years & 8 months, height 5ft 7 inches, weight 148lbs, moles on chest.   Resided Hazelslade, Staffordshire. Formerly general foreman.

27th June 1916, posted 24th Reserve Battalion,  Middlesex Regiment, Service No.3694; 23rd October 1916, embarked / disembarked; 5th November 1916, joined Battalion, "C" Company, In the Field; 10th February 1917, 13 Field Ambulance, wounded; 15th February 1917, Boulogne, 3rd Canadian Hospital, to England, Hospital Ship "Cambria"; 15th February 1917 to 22nd February 1917, Metropolitan Hospital, Kingsland Road, London, NE,  gun shot wound, left arm, shot through & through, piece of metal in forearm;

22nd February 1917, memo from Metropolitan Hospital to Officer in Charge of Records, 1st R.W. Kents - "In accordance with my telegram, I beg to advise you that No.23129 Pte Sargent W. of the C Coy. 1st R.W. Kents died in this Hospital today 22.22.17 at 5.25am. The relatives were not present, having left the afternoon before, with a warning of the grave condition of the patient, and the arrangements for the funeral are proceeding from this office. He was admitted from the BEF France on the 15th February 1917, and death resulted from the effects of gun shot wound received in action."


Metropolitan Hospital

15th February 1917 - Wounded 10th February 1917 in France by spl in the left arm and forearm. At Boulogne to which he was transferred, an operation was done and pieces of spl removed from the arm. Admitted 15 February with many deep wounds in the arm and forearm and with very severe sepsis leading to cellulitis of aforesaid arm. Pt looks distressed and in considerable pain. Had baths.

17th February 1917 - Saline, Brandy, Pot Brown, Aseptic Ergot, subtaneous? injection, followed by 3??of the same stuff for three days twice a day.

18th February 1917 - Patient is weak and complains of considerable pain, which had to be dressed while he was under general anesthetic. A great deal of puss was evacuated, a counter incision was made. Patient has been given continuous saline. P.R. four hourly. 3.20. pm ???? somewhat better, his arm is put on continuous irrigation and he was given  Aseptic Ergot subterraneously.

20th February 1917 - swab taken from wound showed mixed infection of strips and straps. Vaccine containing 500 million straps, 25 million strips, was injected. Pt feels somewhat better.

21st February 1917 - Pt weaker though he is talking well, looks pale.

22nd February 1917 - 3.00am, Pt became very restless, pulse very weak 130 volume not full. Has been on continuous saline P.R. an injection of 10mg digitalis was given subterraneously. Intra venous saline given, pulse improved, volume full, slight improvement in the condition of appearance of Pt. 4.35am Rectal saline returned. Wound looks very septic but no heamorrage. Strych 1/140 Digitalis 1/100. 5.25am patient died.

22nd February 1917, Primary cause of death - Through and through gun shot wounds of left arm. (Patient came into this hospital with a severe form of sepsis leading to extensive suppuration of the whole left arm, which improved under treatment but further symptoms showed that he was suffering from absorption of toxins). Secondary cause of death - Acute septicemia and heart failure. During the last two day he grew somewhat jaundiced became restless had high temperature had ptosis of both eyelids and the powers of reasoning gradually grew less. In spite of our endeavor to keep the heart going it gave out.


3rd September 1917, pension of 22/11 a week awarded to widow & two children.

1921 March, Cannock Registration District, Clara Sargent, married Richard Tilsey.

Buried at St Peter Churchyard Extensions, C. 28. 3., Hednesford, Cannock Chase District, Staffordshire, United Kingdom.
