Regimental Serjeant  Major James Travers / Travis HYDE, G/930, 4th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. 

Born 1869, St Georges East, London, enlisted 16th September 1914, Guildford, Surrey, age 45, height 5ft 11½ inches, weight 166lbs, resided 26 Foster Road, Maidstone. Formerly postman.

Son of Edwin Hyde.

Husband of Caroline Hyde, (nee Austen, spinster), Church Cottage, Chiddingfold. Married Parish Church Ashford, Kent, 22nd December 1904.

Children - Dora Winifred Hyde, born 10th November 1905, Maidstone, Kent.


Home, 29th July 1887 to 12th September 1899; Egypt, 13th September 1899 to 4th March 1900; Home, 5th March 1900 to 15th March 1900; South Africa, 16th March 1900 to 4th November 1902; Ceylon, 5th November 1902 to 2nd March 1904; Home, 3rd March 1904 to 25th July 1908.

Previously served in Royal West Kent Regiment for 21 years, time expired. Service No.2039. Enlisted 29th July 1887, London, age 18, height 5ft 10 3/4 inches, weight 150lbs, posted 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment. Formerly hammerman. 26th July 1894, transferred to Reserve; 21st September 1894, rejoined Colours, 2nd Battalion,  Royal West Kent Regiment ; 3rd October 1894, appointed Lance Corporal;  25th August 1896, promoted Corporal; 2nd April 1898, appointed Lance Sergeant; 13th July 1899, re-engaged at Chatham for such term as to complete 21 years service; 9th August 1899, promoted Sergeant; 1st March 1904, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 9th March 1907, promoted to Colour Sergeant; 25th July 1908, discharged on Termination of 2nd period of engagement.


Home, 16th September 1914 to 12th February 1919.

17th September 1914, appointed Lance Corporal & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 17th September 1914, promoted Acting Company Sergeant Major; 3rd July 1915, appointed Acting Sergeant Major & posted 4/4th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 2nd May 1917, appointed temporary Regimental Serjeant  Major for the duration of the War.

12th February 1919, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to sickness. Silver War Badge issued 

Disability, Defective vision & myalgia, 30% then 20% disability.

Pension, 8/3 a week for 26 weeks, then 5/6 for 26 weeks conditional. Allowances for children  of  2/- for one from 3rd March 1919 to 19th August 1919, then one and fourpence.

Pension reviews - 40d paid from 1st April 1919; 45d paid from 26th April 1924; 49d paid from 26th April 1934; £93 4s. 2d per annum paid from 1st January 1944 to 31st December 1945; £93 4s. 2d per annum paid from 1st January 1946 to 31st March 1947;  September 1947 increase to £96 18s 8d per annum from 1st December 1946.

His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve  of  the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men in recognition of valuable services rendered in connection with the war :

G/930 T./S.M. Hyde, J. T., 4th Battalion. (Maidstone).

Died 31st July 1951, age 82, at West Kent General Hospital, Maidstone, Kent. Resided East Street, Harrietsham, Kent. Heart failure due to bronchial pneumonia, supervening on ???? ????? left ankle an injury which he sustained when he was knocked down by a motor cycle on the Ashford Road, Harrietsham, Kent on 21st July 1951, Accident. Inquest held, 3rd August 1951, certificate received from Coroner 7th August 1951, death certificate issued 17th August 1951.
