Sergeant Frederick ASHBY,  G/7850, 1st   Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  (formerly Royal Sussex Regiment G/13643) killed in action, Flanders France, 4th October 1917, age 32.

Born Hever. Kent, son of William Ashby

1909, March Quarter, Sevenoaks Registration District married Margaret Ellen Harding, of 2, North St., Cowden, Kent.


1911 Census - Glen Cottages, Horne, Lingfield - Frederick Ashby, head, age 26, married, cowman on farm, born Hever, Kent; Margaret Ellen Ashby, wife, age 30, married, 2 years, 1 child still alive, born Cowden, Kent; Frederick William Ashby, son, age 1, born Cowden, Kent.


Enlisted Tonbridge,  Kent resided at Rusthall,  Kent.

15th August 1914, posted BEF.

Private, 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, L/7236; Private, 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, G/7850; Essex Regiment, 22745; Sgt 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, G/7850.

Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 106 to 108, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Men, for gallantry and distinguished service in the Field:

Sergeant Frederick ASHBY,  G/7850, Royal West Kent Regiment, 

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in bringing up his platoon from support on his own initiative and helping to beat of a counter attack. He directed the fire of his men with great skill. During the attack he led them with great coolness and courage until wounded.
