For gallant conduct and ability during the capture of Amara (Mesopotamia), from 31st May to 3rd June, 1915, and at the action of Kut-Al-Amara on 27th, 28th and 29th September, 1915, whilst employed on the machine guns of H.M.S. Comet. He did invaluable work under most exceptional circumstances and behaved with great coolness under heavy shell and rifle fire
