THE ISLE OF THANET The area of the island is 26,179 acres. Its extent from north to south from Epple Bay to Marsh Farm, abutting on the Stour at Minster, is about four miles; and from west to east, from Sarre Bridge to North Foreland Lighthouse, eleven miles. The temperature at Margate is slightly warmer in winter and cooler in summer than London. During the Great War Thanet suffered terribly from the visits of enemy aircraft, it being in the direct line of route from the Continent on their way to the metropolis, and not only in coming but on their return journey bombs were dropped on Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs and surroundings. Bombardments from the sea occurred on the 23rd November 1916, on 25th February 1917, when night attacks were made by enemy destroyers, on the 18th March 1917, and 27 April in the same year.
