There was (and still is) two ways that a couple could get married in The Church of England or Church in Wales.

By Banns
A notice was read out in church for three consecutive Sundays before the marriage, which gave others the opportunity to object to the marriage.

By Licence
A licence was issued by the Bishop, which gave a couple permission to marry either:

In a church in a parish where neither of them lived

In a hurry - as there was no need to wait for 3 weeks.

Occasionally a marriage in church may take place with a certificate issued by the civil Superintendent Registrar.
