London Gazette 25th August 1917.
His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Men, for gallantry and distinguished service in the Field:—
Private J COWELL, G/5723, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a platoon runner. He advanced with his platoon to the attack, and after his serjeant became a casualty assumed command and led his men forward to the objective, working his one remaining Lewis gun successfully in covering the advance. He established touch with the Battalion on his right and superintended the consolidation of the line of shells holes in touch with the other troops on either side of him. On being relieved next day he brought his men out with only one casualty through a shell swept area. His conduct throughout was magnificent and inspired all his men.
