Enlisted 7th December 1914, Maidstone, Kent, age 23, height 5ft 4 inches, weight 145lbs, resided Wards Brook, Ticehurst, Sussex / Forge Gate, Mereworth, nr Maidstone, Kent / Postern Heath Cottage, Tonbridge, Kent. Formerly farm labourer.

Son of Thomas Piper, Wards Brook, Ticehurst, Sussex.

Husband of Emily Piper, (nee Bassett, spinster), married 27th March 1915, Parish Church, East Peckham, Kent.

Child - Lily Emily Piper, born 20th June 1915, Malling, Kent.

7th December 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 16th December 1914, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 22nd April 1915, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 18th May 1915, Belgium, whilst trench digging, wounded, gun shot wound, entered left loin & exited right loin, injuring spine; 22nd June 1915, to England; 23rd June 1915, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 23rd June 1915 to 2nd May 1916, Wharncliffe War Hospital, Sheffield, gun shot wound, loin, laminectomy performed in France 5 days later, now just able to get about, but is very weak; 21st April 1916, Medical Board, Wharncliffe War Hospital, Sheffield, capacity for earning reduced by 50%, discharge as permanently unfit.

26th May 1916, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds Silver War Badge issued.
