Born Charlton, Woolwich, Kent, enlisted 8th February 1912, New Cross, age 18, height 5ft 2½ inches, weight 117lbs, resided 18 Guildford Place, Camberwell, London, SE. Formerly van guard.

Previously served 3rd Battalion, (Special Reserves), Dorset Regiment, 6429. Enlisted 24th May 1911, Stratford until 7th February 1912

Son Frederick & Mary Purnell, 1 Fingel Street, Greenwich, SE. Brothers - William Purnell, (older); George Purnell, (older); Percy Purnell, (younger); Frederick Purnell, HMS Swiftowe.

Home, 8th February 1912 to 13th August 1914; BEF, 14th August 1914 to 3rd November 1914; Home, 4th November 1914 to 12th January 1915; BEF, 13th January 1915 to 22nd November 1915; Home, 23rd November 1915 to 24th July 1916.

8th February 1912, enlisted & posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 13th February 1912, Dublin, joined Battalion; 2nd April 1913 to 10th April 1913, Dublin, King George V Hospital, tonsillitis; 30th March 1914 to 4th April 1914,  Dublin, King George V Hospital, synovitis of left knee, playing football; 26th October 1914, wounded, gun shot wound left hand, 3rd finger amputated; 2nd November 1914, to England; 1st January 1915, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 13th January 1915, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 23rd November 1915, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st February 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 20th June 1916 to 10th July 1916, Fort Pitt Hospital, Chatham, ex-ophthalmic goitre.

6th July 1916, Medical Report - disability permanent, total incapacity, ex-ophthalmic goitre - originated 4th February 1916, at Greenwich, knocked down by a motor car while on weekend pass, fracture base of skull. Not the result of nor aggravated by Military Service. Wounded 26th October 1914, gun shot wound left hand, 3rd finger amputated.

24th July 1916, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds Silver War Badge issued.
